1. Jumbo: The Plane That Changed The World
When we think of planes, most of us immediately think of sleek designs with efficient engineering that have made aviation so exciting. Although these iconic planes remain beloved favorites today, some aircraft have had significant impacts that remain significant to this day.
For instance, the 747 was one of the pioneering aircraft that revolutionized air transportation. Additionally, it became the first two-aisle airliner and has been an iconic part of commercial aviation for more than four decades.
This large aircraft became known as “Queen of the Skies,” representing American preeminence in aerospace technology. Used by Pan Am and numerous other airlines alike, this plane achieved remarkable success, carrying record passenger loads on just one aircraft.
Boeing began developing its line of jumbo jets during the 1970s to compete against Airbus’ long-range planes and challenge trendsetting low-cost carriers. Their aircraft included everything from twin engined A330 twin-jets to ocean-spanning A340 four engine models.
At first, jumbo jets were popular among airlines; however, eventually Airbus outpaced them due to changes in airline purchasing patterns; airlines realized they could save money by flying smaller and more fuel-efficient models than the jumbos.
However, these airplanes had one key drawback: they weren’t comfortable enough for extended flights and their cabins didn’t offer enough seating capacity for passengers who wished to sleep during long flights.
Matthew Scott had an extraordinary relationship with Jumbo, making him extremely contented. They developed a special code between themselves that enabled communication; furthermore, Scott would regularly give Jumbo alcohol.
Jumbo became an immense hit at London Zoo, yet soon showed signs of being dissatisfied and beginning to be aggressive during his nighttime confinement. To relieve Jumbo of these difficulties, they sold him off for PS2,000 to US circus owner P. T. Barnum who purchased him outright in 1882.
2. Airbus vs. Boeing: The Jumbo Jet Race
Airbus and Boeing are the two world’s premier aircraft manufacturers, accounting for more than half of large commercial airliner sales each. Over their history they have maintained one of the fiercest rivalries in aviation technology development – pushing forward groundbreaking new innovations while challenging each other relentlessly.
Rivalry between Airbus and Boeing stems largely from their different visions for the future of air travel. Airbus believed airlines would want to ferry more passengers through major airport hubs with connections (or “spokes”) leading out to smaller markets; Boeing instead preferred an approach tailored more toward long-haul routes.
Airbus introduced the A380 as an attempt to break Boeing’s dominance of the jumbo jet market and ultimately outsell them for good. To combat this situation, they quickly replaced Boeing 747s as most popular large commercial airplanes around the globe with this success story of an airliner.
Airbus created an entirely new market for large widebody aircraft when they introduced their A380 double-decker aircraft at much reduced seat costs than their 747 counterpart.
However, the A380 hasn’t fared quite as well in America due to the US carriers preferring smaller single-aisle planes instead of jumbo jets.
Boeing must quickly catch up in this segment of the market if it wishes to prevent further market share losses to Airbus; but doing so requires making some difficult choices about how best to respond.
At the core of it all lies what truly matters: safety, comfort and cost. Airbus clearly has an edge in these categories over Boeing thanks to their superior safety record as well as higher comfort rating.
Boeing holds an advantage in market share, yet they’re facing difficulties responding to issues surrounding their 737 Max aircraft. It is becoming a serious setback, taking time and money for them to find an acceptable solution.
Boeing is facing serious difficulties due to 737 Max production problems that will likely impact sales and production for years to come. If they can find ways to compete effectively within this vital market, however, Boeing should remain one of the premier aircraft manufacturers for many more years to come.
3. Ice Pilots NWT
Ice Pilots NWT is a reality TV show featuring the hardworking crew of airline executives, pilots and maintenance men that keep airplanes flying throughout northern Canada all year long.
The show’s most impressive feat is featuring numerous aircraft types, from Boeing and Airbus single engine turboprops to several military and commercial jets and vintage gliders.
Yellowknife may not be accessible by plane, but taking this route certainly makes for an adventure! It may not be the cheapest or fastest route, but the effort involved certainly pays off!
